I wish I'd been a fan and in the East Bay when this show happened. I didn't get turned onto Gillian until '97 when a neighbor gave me a cassette copy of Revival. Even though the Freight was a few blocks from my place in Berkeley, we were in Manhattan that year.

I was in a different music scene in college-lots of jazz and funk and dub reggae and weird electronica, and anything remotely popular except for rap was totally out of my line of sight. My musical mentors weren't playing folk at all. I had "Oh Brother," but I didn't hear "Revival" until about 3 yrs ago. I had to hear Dave, too, to realize I was home.

I lived in NC for college from 2001-2005, and again from 2009-2010, had been to many of their classic venues, and it makes me crazy knowing what I know now. But it apparently wasn't my time to have Gillian in my life (though I had Brother and Mountain CDs since high school). I loved it, but no one I knew - family, friends, anyone - was listening to anything like it and it just never occured to me that I could go out and find bluegrass, Americana, even country, myself. (I was always a movie person, not a music one.) But I've sure found her now and am never letting go. less
