I had some time off from work so I was able to roadtrip from NJ to winston-salem for Friday night's Ramkat show. I was not even planning to go but i got my hands on some extra cash, thanks to red 21 on the wheel of death (also known as the roulette wheel). I drove down friday morning and got to the Ramkat at exactly 8pm. Luckily that place has crazy security protocols and everyone had to get searched so the show started a little late.
Got to see both sets, which included some amazing songs (even a cover of Townes - snowing on raton!). Plus every time i hear revelator and down along the dixie line live, i feel like i am having a religious experience.
After the show, i sprinted to my car, which was parked pretty far away and drove back into the Ramkat lot. I waited like 10 mins and was lucky enough to meet Gillian and Dave. I was kind of delirious, maybe because i only ate a few cliff bars all day, or maybe because i was meeting my musical heroes. They both were so nice to me and even signed my Alvarez guitar that i just bought off of craigslist a few months back. Just an amazing few days and i still cant believe i had the amazing privilege to meet them.
Special thanks to Brent for taking these pics. And also to the woman who helped me meet Gillian as i was a little shy and my usual awkward self. I forget her name but it was her birthday so happy birthday to you if you ever see this. less

Let me know and I can send it your way. My story is very much inspired by their music and Van Morrison's Astral Weeks. Thanks! I am not sure if this link will work...but I can always send a pdf...... like I said....I know this is a long shot....but I figured I would share this story anyway since Gillian was the Muse that allowed my to write this story.... less
Helped along the way by an old, blind, former blues legend, a drug addict bar owner, and a few other strangers, a young man and woman follow the yellow brick road to Nashville to pursue their dreams.

This thought festered in my brain today as Radiohead's "Blackstar" came on my ipod. I immediately had to listen to the Gillian version right after because it is so damn classic.
I feel that either of them could take on almost type of song and make it their own. If Sturgill Simpson can make a weird country version of Nirvana's "In Bloom", there are endless possibilities for taking a song and completely recreating the mood and tempo.
I personallywould like to see how Gillian would sing Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come". But I would really love to see them try and cover Smashing Pumpkins "Today". Slow it down and get some crazy Dave solos and I think they would nail the Pumpkins. Every time I hear Beach House's "Myth", I picture the Machine playing a more folky version w/ Dave singing lead. So much space in that song for some crazy Dave solos. less

Still have yet to discover which particular song I'd love Gillian to cover above all else, but for quite a while I've felt that Dave should sing the Grateful Dead's Black Peter, with either the Machine or just Gillian.
shinyappleGood question! I would love to hear them do Speedway at Nazareth, as lead instead of backup to Mark Knopfler. That's a story-song with epic building outro that sounds like it was written just for them. Sung in unison I think or maybe Gillian lead.... moreGood question! RaymondGiuffridaSince a lot of us might have similar musical tastes, I was wondering if anyone wanted to share some of their favorite albums of this year - besides of course "NASHVILLE OBSOLETE". I always love finding new gems that I never heard of... moreSince a lot of us might have similar musical tastes, I was wondering if anyone wanted to share some of their favorite albums of this year - besides of course "NASHVILLE OBSOLETE". Myself, I can't stop listening to the new Alabama shakes album, which is just one great song after another all the way through.
Here are a few of my personal faves
Alabama shakes - sound and color
The Decemberists- what a terrible world...
Asaf Avidan - gold shadow
Brandi carlike - the firewatchers daughter
Israel nash- silver season
Patti griffin - servant of love
Darlingside- just for that "White horses" song alone which is amazing
Chvrches- every open eye
RunningRattie
Brandi Carlile is my other love... The Firewatcher's Daughter was one of her best, to be sure. Also, The Lone Bellow's Then Came the Morning. I don't do the best job of keeping current and this year is a musical blur, so not sure what else was technically 2015.

I discovered a really great duo from Canada last year: Kacy & Clayton. My favorite song of 2015 (sorry DRM) is this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OR65DuZ48Co

Thought this looked familiar... I was the one who took this video in NC. First time ever seeing them. Wish I had a better quality camera but it came out decent enough. Best show I have ever seen.

Thanks for the great site and the welcome. Already spent a few hours looking around and great to meet people who share a love for the greatest songwriters out there.
